Burrell takes pride in the quality of the individuals we employ to serve our communities mental health needs. We have doctoral and master’s level staff members licensed in specialties such as psychiatry, clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, psychiatric nursing, substance abuse counseling, individual and group counseling and clinical social work. Margaret (Peggy) Brothers, ANP

Peggy Brothers, ANP, graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia with her Master of Science in Nursing and is a licensed Adult Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. Peggy practices in the Adult Psychiatric Clinic in Columbia and also provides services via Telehealth.

Melissa Connoley, MSW, LCSW

A graduate of the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Melissa Connoley obtained her Clinical Social Worker license in 1997 and has since acquired significant experience in her field through her work as a clinical case manager and therapist providing case management and behavioral health services through individual, group and family therapy, crisis intervention, treatment plan development, service coordination, support group facilitation and more. In addition to the above, Melissa has shared her clinical expertise with a number of community organizations through both practicum assignments and volunteerism. As part of Burrell’s Central Region staff, Melissa is available to provide services to children, adolescents, adults and senior adults.

Emily Crawford, PhD

Emily Crawford, PhD. earned her doctorate from Miami University; and completed her post-doctoral residency at Harry S. Truman VA Hospital where she specialized in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and traumatic brain injury. Emily Crawford, PhD is a licensed psychologist who currently provides a variety of individual psychological assessments and counseling with adults in Burrell’s Outpatient Clinic in Columbia.

Kevin Crosby, MEd, LPC

Kevin Crosby earned a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 2010.  Kevin gained experience in the delivery of behavioral health services through counseling positions held at the University of Missouri Career Center, where he counseled students and community members on issues relating to relationships, gender roles, academia, careers, and more, and also through his internship with the Phoenix Programs in Columbia where he provided individual counseling, facilitated psycho-educational groups,  and assisted with the re-entry of incarcerated individuals into the community.  A Licensed Professional Counselor, Kevin currently serves as a therapist at the outpatient clinic on Berrywood in Columbia. He is trained in Parent Child Interaction Therapy and several other evidence based treatment modalities. He works with all ages and genders.

Grace Devenport, LPC

Grace Devenport is a Licensed Professional Counselor providing behavioral health care in Burrell’s Central Region for clients ages six and up. Grace graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri where she earned a Master of Education in Counseling degree.   In addition to providing clinical assessments, treatment and discharge planning, and individual therapy, Grace also specializes in treatment through other modalities including group, family and marital therapies.  In addition to her experience with standard methods of treatment, Grace has earned certification in a variety of therapeutic approaches including Caring for People God’s Way, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Exposure Therapy.  Her background includes working with a diverse clientele including youth, adolescents and adults presenting with a variety of issues including developmental disabilities, severe and persistent mental illness, dual diagnosis and more.

John Dubose, PhD

John Dubose completed numerous clinical practicums and externships, gaining experience in the delivery of behavioral health care, before completing a pre-doctoral psychology internship at Broughton Hospital in North Carolina. In 2013, John earned a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Jackson State University in Mississippi and, in 2014, completed a post-doctoral residency with the Veteran’s Administration Health Care System in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Dubose’s background includes extensive experience in providing individual and group psychotherapy through several treatment modalities including motivational interviewing, individual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (BDT), CBT-oriented groups, and more. Dr. Dubose has worked extensively with many populations and diagnoses including schizophrenia; mood, anxiety, and adjustments disorders; stress and relationship issues; developmental disabilities; severe mental illness; and more. As a member of Burrell Behavioral Health’s outpatient psychology treatment team, Dr. Dubose is available for individual and group therapy for individuals age six and up in the Columbia, MO area.

Armando Favazza, MD

Dr. Favazza graduated from the University of Virginia with his medical degree and completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Michigan. He is a board certified psychiatrist and emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri.

Kristen Hayes, MSW, LCSW

Kristen Hayes, LCSW, holds a Masters of Social Work from the University of Texas and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She provides individual and family therapy to children ages seven and up, adolescents, and adults. She is trained in Parent Child Interaction Therapy and utilizes this for children ages two to six.

Marlene Howser, MA, LPC

Marlene Howser, LPC, is the Director of Youth Special Services at the Child and Adolescent Clinic in Columbia. She graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia with a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and is a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Rachel Jones, MEd, LPC

Rachel Jones received a Masters of Education degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 2007. Ms. Jones has experience in serving children, adolescents and adults through group therapy, parenting and crisis services. Currently, Ms. Jones serves as Director of Berrywood Child & Adolescent Clinic located in Columbia, Missouri.

Nicola Keeth, DNP, FPMHNP

In 2002, Nicola Keeth earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Mental Health Nursing from Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. In the United States, Nicola pursued a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Missouri Columbia’s Sinclair School of Nursing, graduating summa cum laude in 2007. Nicola continued her education at the University of Missouri and, in 2015, earned a Doctorate of Nursing Degree and certification as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a minor in Nursing Education. Throughout her education, Nicola earned a number of honors, awards, and scholarships including the esteemed nomination for University of Missouri DNP Student of Overall Excellence, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and several notable scholarships. Nicola’s background includes extensive practice in many areas of nursing and currently she is a member of Burrell Behavioral Health’s psychiatric team, providing care to individuals age six and up in the Columbia, MO area.

Susan Langstraat, MSW, LCSW

Susan Langstraat is a graduate of the University of Missouri – Columbia School of Social Work and has an extensive background in treating individuals coping with depression, anxiety, physical and/or sexual abuse, PTSD, dissociative disorders, adjustment disorders, grief, and much more.  Susan has worked extensively in the area of family therapy, counseling individuals and families with issues relating to blended families, parenting concerns, marriage and relationship difficulties, as well as improving family dynamics.  Susan has worked significantly with seriously emotionally disturbed youth and provided parent coaching and counseling for many families.  Additionally, Susan has assisted many individuals and caregivers coping with an Autism diagnoses by helping them navigate the system of care, access services, and providing emotional support.  Susan is a member of Burrell Behavioral Health’s Central Region outpatient staff, specializing in chemical dependency, MRDD services, and group, family, play and marital therapies. She is also trained in Parent Child Interaction Therapy and works with all ages.

Robin McCartney, MSW, LCSW

Robin McCartney graduated with her Masters of Social Work from the University of Missouri Columbia in 1998. She has since gained significant experience in the delivery of behavioral health care through her work as a therapist and a clinical supervisor. Robin has served as a probation and parole officer, responsible for providing substance abuse and therapeutic treatment programming and, as a therapist, Robin has experience in providing individual, group and family therapies. Additionally, Robin’s background includes the facilitation of psycho-educational groups, assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical supervision of social work candidates and practicum students. Today Robin provides general behavioral health services as well as marital, group, family and substance abuse therapies in Burrell’s Central Region.

Katherine Ottofy, MSW, LCSW

Katherine Ottofy, LCSW, earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Missouri in Columbia and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She is an outpatient clinician at Burrell’s Stephen’s Lake Clinic in Columbia and has experience working with adults with severe and persistent mental illness.

Morgan Pemberton, MEd, PLPC

Morgan Pemberton, MEd, PLPC, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Family Studies and Human Services from Kansas State University in August 2007. She then earned her Master of Education in Counseling, with an emphasis on Counseling and Marriage & Family Therapy from Stephens College in May 2014.  Morgan has experience working in behavioral health since 2007 in many different capacities and has been part of the staff at Burrell as a Community Support Supervisor since July 2014, subsequently transitioning into a position as an Evaluator in the Assessment Center in 2016. Ms. Pemberton works with clients ranging in age from adolescent to senior adult and specializes in individual, group, family and marital therapy.

Anita Pinson, MA, LPC

Anita Pinson is a 2003 graduate of Webster University where she earned her Master of Arts in Counseling degree.  Upon graduation, Anita completed a counseling internship at Cornerstone Counseling providing therapy to all ages.  She has since worked in the Missouri Head Start Program where she implemented curriculum, modeled appropriate teaching methods for teachers, linked children and families with community resources,  problem solved in the classroom, and taught teaching techniques designed to promote positive classroom behavior.  As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Anita is experienced in the delivery of individual, family, and play therapies and in the design and implementation of treatment plans.  Currently, Anita serves as a Community Support Specialist, supporting clients and assisting them in connecting to community resources, reaching treatment goals and helping them understand and manage their mental health diagnoses.

Jon E. Rapp, MSW, LCSW, ACSW

John Rapp is a 1977 Master’s level graduate of the University of Missouri School of Social work. Since 1980, he has been a member of the National Association of Social Workers and also the Academy of Certified Clinical Social Workers. Since the beginning of his career, Jon has worked actively in the field of social work. He has coordinated several treatment programs, delivered services and provided clinical social work supervision for nine county community clinics. Additionally, Jon has worked in the inpatient setting at Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center. There, he was promoted to Social Service Director prior to retiring after 30 years of state service. Since his retirement from Mid-MO MHC, Jon has worked part-time with the University of Missouri Department of Psychiatry, Missouri Institute for Mental Health and other agencies conducting clinical research, providing consultation to residential care facilities, and volunteering with city, county and state organizations. At present, Jon shares his expertise on a part-time basis with Burrell Behavioral Health’s Youth and Outpatient Services program in the Columbia, MO area where he specializes in play, group, family and marital therapies.

Lora Rooker, MA, LPC, NCC

Lora Rooker, a Master’s level graduate of the University of Iowa, with additional training at Old Dominion University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor available to provide behavioral health services to children, adolescents, adults and senior adults from Burrell’s Berrywood clinic in Columbia. As a Nationally Certified Counselor with certified community mental health counselor status, Lora’s behavioral health care background includes significant experience in the areas of school counseling as well as the provision of group, individual and family therapy, including Parent Child Interaction Therapy. Additionally, Lora’s experience includes the administration of individual and couple’s therapy, crisis evaluation and debriefing, and case management responsibilities.

Laura Smith, DO

Laura Smith earned a Master of Science Degree in Counseling Education from Mississippi State University in 2004, where she continued until 2005 to fulfill pre-medical requirements.  In 2006, Laura enrolled in the A. T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri where she earned a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine.  Upon completion of her doctoral degree, Laura completed both a psychiatric internship and residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center which included practice in the areas of primary care, neurology, inpatient psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and more. Currently, Dr. Smith is a member of Burrell Behavioral Health’s psychiatric team, providing clinical assessments, treatment planning, individual and medical psychotherapy, medication management and administration, and psychiatric evaluations in Burrell’s Central Region to both adults and senior adults.

Megan Steen, MSW, LCSW

Megan Steen graduated with her Masters of Social Work from the University of Missouri Columbia in 2009; Megan has since gained significant experience in the delivery of behavioral health services. In addition to her extensive volunteer experience, Megan’s background includes work as a Care Manager, coordinating individualized services for children and families, developing treatment plans, facilitation of Family Support Team meetings, providing crisis intervention, and more. As a respite care provider, Megan provided respite care to individuals with developmental disabilities before joining Burrell in 2010. During her employment with Burrell, Megan has worked as Community Support Supervisor, supervising a team of individuals assisting adults diagnosed with mental illness, planning crisis intervention and related services as needed, performing clinical assessments, documenting psychosocial histories, facilitation of skill building groups and more. Currently Megan serves as the Director of Adult Services for Burrell’s Central Region, including Columbia, MO and several area communities.

Samuel M. Temesgen, MD

Samuel M. Temesgen earned his doctorate degree in 2001 from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia where he continued, for the next several years, his practice of general practitioner/primary care physician.  Dr. Temesgen’s background includes the practice of medicine in the emergency room, outpatient, and inpatient settings in four major disciplines including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery and Obstetrics/Gynecology.  Dr. Temesgen served as the Vice Medical Director of Yirgalem Hospital during the last eight months of his stay in Ethiopia. Between 2011 and 2015, Dr. Temesgen completed a four-year General Psychiatry Residency Program at St. Louis University School of Medicine.  Currently Dr. Temesgen practices psychiatry in Burrell Behavioral Health’s Central Region where he conducts clinical assessments, treatment planning, individual therapy and medical psychotherapy, medication administration and management, and psychiatric evaluations for all ages.  Dr. Temesgen also specializes in forensic evaluations and in the delivery of care for individuals with MRDD or chemical dependency diagnoses.

Timothy Von Engeln. MSW, LCSW

Timothy Von Engeln earned his Master of Social Work Degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 1983. Since that time Tim has acquired extensive experience in the delivery of behavioral health services within the Community Mental Health Center environment. Tim’s background   includes the delivery of screenings, assessments and treatment for the chronically mentally ill, treating severely emotionally disturbed youth, counseling chemically dependent individuals and their families, and providing crisis-intervention services. In addition to being a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Tim is a Qualified Substance Abuse Professional and has directed a variety of mental health programs, conducted community and professional trainings, has actively participated in the development of integrated health programming, and operated as a Behavioral Health Consultant. Tim is a part of Burrell Behavioral Health’s outpatient team in Columbia, Missouri where he sees patients as young as six years old and specializes in chemical dependency services and group therapy.

Benjamin Wall, MA, LPC

Benjamin Wall is a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing in Burrell Behavioral Health’s Outpatient Clinic at Berrywood in Columbia, where he provides clinical assessments, treatment planning, individual therapy, and discharge planning to children, adolescents and adults. Benjamin specializes in play, group, marital and family therapies and has experience in working with a variety of issues including relational difficulties, communication problems, parenting issues, and personality disorders as well as matters involving grief, divorce, trauma, addiction, anxiety and more. Through his work as a family therapist, Benjamin has acquired significant experience working with high risk children and adolescents; he is skilled in coordinating care with other professionals to ensure a comprehensive system of treatment for his clients. Benjamin has a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies earned at North Park University in Chicago and a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling achieved at the Denver Seminary in Littleton, Colorado.

Anna White, MEd, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor Anna White is a member of Burrell Behavioral Health’s outpatient staff serving individuals aged six and up. Anna is a 1978 graduate of the University of Virginia where she earned a Master’s of Education Degree in Guidance and Counseling. Anna continues to pursue a doctoral degree in Organizational and Industrial Psychology. She has extensive experience in the delivery of behavioral health services within the community mental health setting—she has managed community based youth and family programming; provided individual, group, and family counseling; delivered crisis intervention to families facing homelessness; participated in grant writing, program development, program implementation, fundraising, and program management; provided clinical supervision; managed foster care programming; and much more. As a member of Burrell’s Central Region staff, Anna practices as a Mental Health Liaison, assisting clients in Columbia, MO and surrounding areas.

Abram Wilks, MSW, LCSW

Abram Wilks, LCSW, graduated with his Master of Social Work from the University of Missouri in Columbia and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Abram is an outpatient clinician Burrell’s Outpatient Clinic in Columbia and has over seven years of experience working with adolescents, adults and families suffering from an array of chronic mental health issues.

Johanna Womack, LPC

Johanna Womack is a Licensed Professional Counselor providing behavioral health care in Burrell’s Moberly, Missouri facility. Johanna earned her Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Webster University-Rolla in 2008 and has since gained extensive experience in various areas of behavioral health care including case management, independent living instruction, completion of assessments, development of treatment plans, and providing individual and group therapies. Johanna is available to provide care to children, adolescents and adults.

Timothy Woodard, MD

In 1999, Timothy Woodard completed his Medical Degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School at Houston. Upon completion of his degree, Dr. Woodard entered the psychiatric residency program at the University of Texas Mental Sciences Institute/Harris Psychiatric Center and in 2002 he was named Chief Resident in Psychiatry for that facility. Dr. Woodard has practiced psychiatry in Colorado for several years and in 2014he acquired license to practice in the State of Missouri where he will administer psychiatric care to Burrell Behavioral Health clients in Columbia and surrounding areas. In addition to his volunteer service with the University of Texas AIDS Education Project and the Emergency Center of the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, Dr. Woodard has significant teaching experience and has educated professionals on topics related to Professional Burnout, Antipsychotic Therapy, Inpatient Medical Detox, Psychopharmacology and more.
