Burrell Behavioral Health, Preferred Family Healthcare to begin offering primary care services at Burrell’s Stephens Lake Clinic in Columbia

More than half of all Burrell Behavioral Health clients do not have a primary care physician, which mirrors national trends for individuals with behavioral health disorders.

Additionally, for those with a diagnosed serious mental illness, life expectancy is reduced up to 25 years, largely because of untreated physical ailments.

Burrell Behavioral Health and Preferred Family Healthcare (PFH) are pleased to announce a new option for this underserved population in Columbia and Boone County.

Preferred Family Healthcare (PFH) has been approved by the Health Resources & Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care to locate a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Columbia, which will be located at Burrell’s Stephens Lake Clinic, 1805 E. Walnut St. PFH will operate under their Clarity Healthcare subsidiary, and will begin by taking referrals from Burrell providers.

Burrell President & CEO C.J. Davis says this partnership is a game-changer for Burrell clients and those with mental health and substance-use needs in Boone County.

“There is no ‘wrong door’ when it comes to taking care of your health, whatever the need may be,” Davis said. “We’re incredibly excited, with our partners at PFH, to become a true whole-health network for those experiencing mental health, addiction or co-morbid medical concerns. More options and easier access means more lives saved.”

PFH has until Jan. 20, 2022 to begin offering services at Stephens Lake Clinic, which initially will include general family medicine, some testing and lab work, chronic care management and routine women’s care as they work up to their full spectrum of services.

“The connection between our physical health and mental health has never been more important, and now Burrell clients will be able to receive help with both in a single location,” said Preferred Family Healthcare President & CEO Mike Schwend. “Having a medical ‘home’ is vital to anyone seeking healthcare services, and we are grateful for Burrell’s support in reaching this underserved population.”

As announced last spring, Burrell – Boone County’s state-designated Community Mental Health Center –and Preferred Family Healthcare currently are exploring a joint partnership that will bring both organizations together under a common parent company. This process is expected to be complete in early 2022, though the co-location of PFH’s primary care services at Stephens Lake Clinic is not dependent upon a formal partnership between the companies.
