SPRINGFIELD – One of Burrell Behavioral Health’s flagship spaces underwent an 18-month, $4.1-million renovation.

The Building A renovation on the Burrell main campus in Springfield, Missouri provides clients with a welcoming space where physical and behavioral health needs can be addressed under one roof. The redesigned space includes new homes for Pharmacy, Nursing and Psychiatric Services, as well as the Fordland Clinic, which offers primary care services. The team at the Youth Focus Clinic, where young clients can be diagnosed and treated for ADHD, will have a wing of the building to themselves after sharing space with the Fordland Clinic.

"The renovation of Building A on our Main Campus puts our clients and our providers first,” said Shawn Sando, President of the Brightli Medical Group. “From the moment you come through the doors, our intention is that you feel both welcomed and cared for. You will find designated check-in spaces, our world-class Burrell Pharmacy, and a comfortable, spacious waiting area once you enter. As you continue to your appointment, you'll be cared for in spaces designed to respect your privacy while you receive compassionate care from our incredible team. I thank the community and our dedicated providers and staff for their support and patience throughout the renovation process. We're thrilled to open the doors to our clients and our team."

Building A, located at 1300 E Bradford Parkway, was dedicated on March 11, 1986. Over its nearly four-decade lifespan, the Burrell team has increased the number of health care treatment methods offered there to meet clients’ needs, outgrowing the previous layout of the building in the process. The redesign factors in spaces for modern modalities of care, and it provides opportunities to continue expanding services to address the unique needs of all clients. The project was completed with help from the Missouri Department of Mental Health, which contributed $1,250,000 in funding.

Dewitt and Associates served as the principal contractor for the project, which was designed by Springfield-based Hood-Rich Architecture. Burrell providers, pharmacists and executives all took part in the architectural design process.

“We were very intentional about creating a modern and welcoming environment,” Brightli Southwest Regional President Clay Goddard said. “Client experience is very important to us, and it was very thoughtfully woven into the design of this space.”

In the newly designed Psychiatric Services space, for example, there is a set of rooms dedicated to Telehealth Services. It offers closed-door privacy for individual clients and a dedicated station for a Burrell staff member to attend to any in-person needs that arise during the appointments.

Psychiatric Services will also feature a space dedicated to specialty treatments for clients who have either not responded to depression medication management or for whom more common forms of treatment have stopped working, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). TMS is a treatment method Burrell staff in which magnetic pulses delivered to the brain are designed to change neural activity and treat depression.

Burrell also intends to now offer Esketamine Treatment in Springfield thanks to space created by the renovation project. Esketamine, delivered via a nasal spray, is administered by a trained staff member and targets treatment-resistant depression in clients. The treatment gained FDA approval in 2019 and is currently offered by Burrell’s Psychiatric team in Columbia. It will soon be offered at Building A in Springfield once team members complete the training required to administer esketamine.
